Having already booked tickets for two Brahms concerts down town, we discovered that Sha Tin itself has plenty to offer closer to home. We tend to forget that this suburb with its 700,000 inhabitants is bigger than Oslo and has over twice the population of my home city, Coventry. The town hall here is magnificent and contains a concert hall to rival Birmingham Symphony Hall. So on Saturday evening we had the pleasure of witnessing a 90 year-old Sir Neville Marriner conduct the Hong Kong orchestra. The programme before the interlude was all English – Elgar, Delius and Howard Blake’s clarinet concerto (Neville’s son soloed) and the Hayden’s 104th symphony, the last of the London symphonies. Ingrid was astounded and delighted when she heard that Delius had used a local Norwegian folk tune, «I Ole vatn» , as his theme. Not bad for a 90 year-old, after all the concert lasted at least an hour and a half. Ingrid googled Marriner, discovering he has concerts scheduled until 2020. That is the way to go!
